Just coming back from my wife's company trip to Club Med, Cherating, it struck me how pristine clean the beach was there. I found it really strange coming from a Malaysian beach.
You see, most Malaysian beaches are absolutely filthy. Absolutely. If you go to the traditional beach resort of Port Dickson, you'd feel sick before you even got to the water. This is due to the garbage and filth that Malaysians heap on to their beaches. And I'm talking used styrofoam food containers, plastic cutlery, drink bottles, soda cans, plastic bags, junk food wrappers, even the odd human (yes, human) excrement. It gets a bit better at 5 star places where they maintain their own beach or have their own private beach, like at Avillon Port Dickson or Four Seasons Langkawi (including Club Med Cherating), they actually clean up the beach often so you don't see any garbage there. Recently when we went to Sunset Beach Resort in Langkawi, we saw the occasional liquor bottle and beer bottles strewn about the beach, and in the sea we actually were accosted by plastic bags and some styrofoam.
Public trash cans are provided at pretty much all these public beaches, why can't these idiots actually just walk a little bit and dispose of their garbage in proper places? It's not like it costs them anything to just dispose of stuff in the right place. When questioned, some of these people just answer rudely "it's not my house, mah". I'd like to see a garbage truck pull up to their place and dump a whole truckload of garbage into their place. Stupid ignorant peons.
It's not even really just our beaches. You can see the effects of this Malaysian mentality of "not my house" in the cities, rivers, you name it. Our Prime Minister really hit the nail on the head when he said we have a "first-world infrastructure, third-world mentality". The way things are going, I'd say it's fourth-world, rather than third-world. Such a disgrace.
